It is very common problem that occurs in approximately 20-40% women of reproductive age. Uterine fibroids are also called leiomyoma. In 99 % cases these uterine growths are non-cancerous but these uterine fibroids cause serious complications associated with menstruation and fertility.

Uterine fibroids are very common benign tumours that are found in female genital organs. Usually these fibroids are symptomless but in many cases these are hard masses that are accompanied by heavy bleeding and excessive pain. Fibroids grow in uterus as single tumour or also may occur in groups and size of these uterine fibroids may vary from size of pea to size of large grapefruit. In majority of cases of females these uterine fibroids are large in size. Majority of females that are suffering with uterine fibroids may experience –

  • Excessive menstrual bleeding
  • Menstruation lasting for one week or 15 days
  • Pain and heaviness in lower abdomen
  • Severe pelvic pain
  • Difficulty in emptying bladder and frequent urination
  • Chronic constipation
  • Backache and pain in lower extremities
  • Generalized weakness

Changes in genes and hormonal imbalance both are responsible for this disease. Growth of these fibroids is affected by estrogen and progesterone hormone.

According to Ayurveda uterine fibroids are categorized under granthiroga. Our vitiated tridoshas (vata, pitta and kapha), blood (rakta dhatu), muscles (mamsa dhatu) and fat (meda dhatu) along with vitiated kaphadosha produces knotty, hard and glandular mass(s) in uterus and this mass is called granthi i.e.- fibroid. Formation of these hard and glandular masses in female uterus is called uterine fibroids.

Management of Uterine Fibroids with Ayurveda

Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, are benign (non-cancerous) growths that develop in the muscular wall of the uterus. They are among the most common health conditions affecting women, especially during their reproductive years. Symptoms of uterine fibroids may include heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, frequent urination, back pain, and difficulty getting pregnant. In Ayurveda, uterine fibroids are primarily associated with an imbalance in the doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) and toxins (Ama) in the body.

Understanding Uterine Fibroids in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, uterine fibroids are seen as a result of an imbalance in the Kapha dosha (which governs tissue growth and fluid retention) and sometimes an aggravated Pitta dosha (which can lead to inflammation and abnormal tissue growth). According to Ayurvedic principles, the formation of fibroids is often related to:

  1. Imbalanced Kapha Dosha:

    • Kapha dosha governs the structure and growth of tissues. When Kapha is aggravated, it can lead to excessive tissue formation or congestion in the uterus, manifesting as fibroids. Heavy, sluggish digestion (weak Agni) is often a root cause of this imbalance.

  2. Accumulation of Ama (Toxins):

    • Ama, or undigested toxins, forms when digestion is weak or food is not properly metabolized. These toxins accumulate in the tissues, leading to inflammation, stagnation, and growths like fibroids.

  3. Hormonal Imbalance:

    • The Ayurvedic approach recognizes that hormonal imbalances, particularly in estrogen and progesterone, can contribute to the growth of fibroids. Pitta imbalance can lead to excessive heat and inflammation, while Kapha imbalance leads to tissue proliferation.

  4. Poor Lifestyle and Diet:

    • A sedentary lifestyle, improper diet, and emotional stress can disturb the balance of the doshas, leading to conditions like fibroids. Diets high in dairy, sugar, processed foods, and refined carbohydrates may aggravate Kapha, leading to tissue growth and stagnation.

  5. Emotional Factors:

    • Emotional stress, repressed anger, and unresolved grief can disturb the Vata and Pitta doshas, leading to internal stagnation and tissue formation in the uterus. Emotional blockages are also thought to affect the reproductive system, contributing to fibroid development.

Ayurvedic Approach to Managing Uterine Fibroids

Ayurvedic treatment for uterine fibroids focuses on balancing the doshas, improving digestion, and eliminating Ama (toxins). The goal is to address the root cause of fibroid formation and reduce the size of the growths while promoting overall uterine health.

1. Herbal Remedies for Uterine Fibroids

Ayurvedic herbs are often used to balance the doshas, reduce inflammation, promote detoxification, and regulate hormonal balance. Here are some key herbs:

  • Kanchanar (Bauhinia variegata):

    • Benefits: Kanchanar is considered one of the most effective herbs for managing uterine fibroids. It helps to shrink the size of fibroids by reducing Kapha and Pitta imbalances. Kanchanar also supports the lymphatic system and helps to detoxify the uterus.

    • How to Use: Kanchanar Guggulu is commonly used in powdered or tablet form for managing fibroids.

  • Ashoka (Saraca asoca):

    • Benefits: Ashoka is a well-known herb in Ayurveda used for female reproductive health. It is known to tone the uterus, reduce inflammation, and regulate menstrual flow. It also helps balance Pitta and Kapha, which are responsible for uterine growths.

    • How to Use: Ashoka can be taken as a powder or in combination with other herbs in formulations like Ashoka Arishta (a herbal tonic).

  • Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus):

    • Benefits: Shatavari is a key herb for female reproductive health. It helps balance hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone, and promotes the health of the uterus. It also strengthens the female reproductive organs and can help with menstrual irregularities.

    • How to Use: Shatavari can be consumed as a powder, in a tablet form, or as an extract.

  • Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia):

    • Benefits: Guduchi is a powerful detoxifying herb that strengthens the immune system and helps reduce inflammation. It supports overall uterine health and aids in the removal of Ama (toxins) from the body, which is crucial for managing fibroids.

    • How to Use: Guduchi is available in powder, tablet, or liquid extract forms.

  • Turmeric (Curcuma longa):

    • Benefits: Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that help reduce inflammation and prevent tissue growth in the uterus. It also helps balance Kapha and Pitta.

    • How to Use: Turmeric can be taken as golden milk (turmeric in warm milk), in capsule form, or as fresh root.

  • Triphala:

    • Benefits: Triphala is a combination of three fruits—Amla, Haritaki, and Bibhitaki—which work synergistically to improve digestion, detoxify the body, and eliminate Ama. It helps reduce the accumulation of toxins in the uterus.

    • How to Use: Triphala can be consumed in powder or tablet form, typically before bed.

  • Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri):

    • Benefits: Brahmi is used to calm the nervous system and reduce stress. Emotional stress can contribute to fibroids, so Brahmi helps in addressing the mental and emotional aspects of the condition.

    • How to Use: Brahmi can be consumed in powder form or as capsules.

2. Diet and Lifestyle Adjustments

Diet plays an essential role in Ayurveda’s management of uterine fibroids. An Ayurvedic diet focuses on improving digestion (Agni), reducing Kapha, and detoxifying the body.

  • Kapha-Pacifying Diet: To manage fibroids, focus on a Kapha-balancing diet that emphasizes light, warm, and easily digestible foods. Avoid foods that are heavy, greasy, cold, or damp (like dairy products, processed foods, and refined sugars), as they can exacerbate Kapha.

  • Incorporate Detoxifying Foods: Include anti-inflammatory and detoxifying foods such as ginger, garlic, turmeric, cabbage, and leafy greens to help reduce inflammation and eliminate toxins.

  • Increase Fiber Intake: High-fiber foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are beneficial for promoting healthy digestion and detoxification, preventing the formation of Ama.

  • Reduce Estrogenic Foods: Avoid soy-based products and pesticide-laden foods that may increase estrogenic activity in the body, as high estrogen levels can contribute to the growth of fibroids.

  • Hydration: Drink plenty of warm water or herbal teas throughout the day to maintain good hydration and promote detoxification.

  • Avoid Stimulants: Caffeine, alcohol, and processed sugars should be avoided, as they can disrupt the body’s hormonal balance and contribute to Pitta imbalance.

3. Lifestyle Practices

  • Yoga and Pranayama: Yoga helps promote circulation, reduce stress, and balance the doshas. Poses like Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose), Setu Bandhasana (Bridge Pose), and Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose) are particularly beneficial for pelvic health. Pranayama (breathing exercises) such as Anulom Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing) can help reduce stress and balance hormones.

  • Stress Management: Emotional stress, anxiety, and unresolved grief can contribute to the formation of fibroids. Practices like meditation, mindfulness, and relaxation techniques are important for managing stress and promoting overall health.

  • Regular Exercise: Engage in regular, moderate exercise to promote circulation, improve digestion, and reduce excess Kapha in the body. Walking, swimming, and dancing are great options.

  • Adequate Sleep: Ensure that you get adequate rest and good quality sleep to allow your body to
